Gunter Demnig has laid more than fifty paving stones covered with sheets of brass on the footpaths in front of former residential buildings where Jewish residents lived in Oranienstraße and Dresdener Straße.
Their names, their dates of birth and the dates of their fate are engraved in the metal, and are a stark reminder of their persecution during the Third Reich. The art and memorial activity was part of the exhibition titled Artists search for Auschwitz, organized by the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst in Berlin (New Society for Fine Art in Berlin) in 1996. It is still in progress.
In November 2000, the number of Stumbling Blocks had risen to eighty-nine, laid on twenty-two streets in Kreuzberg. By mid-2005, more than 5,000 of the golden memorials had been laid in Berlin and throughout Germany. They document the traces not just of Jewish citizens who were persecuted, but also of other victims of National Socialism. Since then the artist has received requests from other European cities.
Companies, residents’ groups and individuals can research the whereabouts of former Jewish inhabitants and help to finance the production and laying of further stones. These cost just 100 Euros. Details can be obtained from the Koordinierungsstelle Stolpersteine, c/o Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand (German Resistance Memorial Centre), Stauffenbergstr. 13-14, 10785 Berlin, Tel/Fax: +49 (0)30 263989014/+49 (0)30 26995010, E-Mail: Stolpersteine@GDW-Berlin.de. |
