Literature Workshop

Since the beginning of the 1990’s, one of the most important addresses for poetry in the city, the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin, has been housed in a Pankow villa. Its readings are considered to be the very best, both in terms of atmosphere and content and great importance is attached to its “Sommernacht der Lyrik” ( A summer’s night of poetry) which is considered a highlight not only of the German-speaking, literary world but now has an international reputation. Since Autumn 1999 it has shared a virtual poetry forum on the internet, www.lyrikline.org where poems with text and voice appear, read by the poets themselves, together with the authors’ portraits and life stories. The house at 46- 48 Majakowskiring and its garden, now romantically overgrown was the home of Otto Grotewohl, from 1950 to the mid 60’s. He was the first prime minister of the GDR. The house was handed back to its former owners and in november 2002  the Literaturwerkstatt will move to the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg.
